This important instruction means that before autoclaving the carboy, you must loosen the cap completely so that it is not tightly sealed. During autoclaving, pressure builds up inside the container. If the cap is tightly sealed, this pressure cannot escape and may cause the carboy to deform, rupture, or explode. Always loosen the cap or remove it entirely before placing the carboy in the autoclave.
The polypropylene spigot body is typically autoclavable, but you should check the specific instructions for your carboy model. Some spigots may contain O-rings or other components with different temperature tolerances. For best results, you may choose to remove the spigot before autoclaving and sterilize it separately, or ensure it is in the open position during autoclaving to allow pressure equalization.
The spigot is designed to be screwed directly into the threaded port on the carboy body. To install, apply PTFE tape to the spigot threads for a better seal (optional), then screw it firmly into place by hand. Do not overtighten, as this could damage the threads. To replace, simply unscrew the old spigot and install the new one following the same procedure.
These polypropylene carboys offer several significant advantages over glass: they are virtually unbreakable, eliminating safety hazards from broken glass; they are significantly lighter, making handling and transport easier; they have excellent chemical resistance; they are autoclavable; and they cost less than equivalent glass carboys. They provide the same functionality with superior safety and durability.
Polypropylene has good resistance to many solvents but is not suitable for all organic solvents. It is compatible with alcohols, dilute solutions, and many aqueous mixtures. However, it may swell or degrade when exposed to strong non-polar solvents like toluene, xylene, chloroform, or dichloromethane. Always check chemical compatibility charts for specific solvents before long-term storage.
For routine cleaning, fill partially with warm water and mild laboratory detergent, swirl vigorously, and rinse thoroughly with distilled water multiple times. For more thorough cleaning, use a long-handled carboy brush to scrub the interior. For stubborn residues, soak with appropriate cleaning solutions overnight. Always rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before refilling. The wide mouth design (if applicable) facilitates cleaning access.
The graduated markings on these carboys are intended for approximate volume reference, not for precise volumetric measurements. They provide a convenient way to estimate liquid levels at a glance. For exact measurements, you should still use calibrated volumetric glassware such as graduated cylinders or volumetric flasks.
These carboys typically feature standard GL (German Laboratory) thread sizes, often GL-45 for the main opening. However, thread specifications may vary. Please check the product documentation or contact Polylab customer service for specific thread information for replacement caps or accessories.
While polypropylene has good heat resistance, dispensing very hot liquids (near boiling) through the spigot is not recommended, as it may cause softening or deformation of the spigot components. Allow liquids to cool to safe handling temperatures (typically below 60°C) before dispensing. For autoclaved liquids, allow the carboy to cool sufficiently before using the spigot.
These carboys with stop cock are available in two sizes: 10 Ltrs. (Code 34051) and 20 Ltrs. (Code 34052). Both sizes are packed individually (1 piece per pack).
